New York Liberty unveils $80 million dollar state-of-the-art practice facility
NEW YORK — The New York Liberty announced plans to build a state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot practice facility in Brooklyn by 2027.
The facility, which is estimated to cost about $80 million dollars, will be located in Greenpoint along Newtown Creek according to a team press release on Thursday. The franchise will takeover a former four-story lightbulb factory and will construct an additional two-story, 40,000-square-foot structure.
“We are a player-first organization and investing in health and wellness has always been a priority for us,” Clara Wu Tsai, Governor of the New York Liberty, said in the release. “This facility is a sign of our commitment to the team, to the city of New York, and to the advancement of women’s sports.”
According to team officials, the center is expected to house many amenities including private suites in locker rooms, two full-sized indoor basketball courts, an outdoor basketball court, a roof deck for player dining, and private family rooms.
Forwards Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, as well as guard Sabrina Ionescu assisted in the design of the building.
“The Liberty made this facility a true player-led endeavor, incorporating our insights to help us be our best, while strengthening our bond as a team and with the New York community,” Stewart said in the release. “As a mom, I’m especially grateful for the family rooms—it means everything to know my family is cared for while I stay locked in on my craft.”
The franchise plans to expand its community outreach and engagement by adding a “fan-facing immersive experience, hospitality, and a retail storefront.”
Liberty officials said construction costs will be fully-funded by the ownership group.
“I am grateful to be a part of an organization who recognizes the power of investment in their players, and ensures we have everything we need to be at top of our game at all times,” Ionescu said in the release. “It was amazing to sit down with Populous and walk through what is most important to us as athletes to be successful in all aspects of our lives. This facility is a massive next step for the New York Liberty.”
The defending WNBA champions will open up their 2025 season at home against the Las Vegas Aces on May 17.
