New York Liberty’s Brianna Stewart makes WNBA history; fuels comeback win against Atlanta Dream
BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Glass Ceiling Sports) – New York Liberty veteran forward Brianna Stewart continues to make an impact on the court this season as she etched her name in the WNBA history books.
On Sunday, Stewart became the fastest player in league history to score more than 5,000 points. The eight-year veteran playing in her 242nd game, accomplished the milestone with a seven-foot jump shot in the second quarter.
The first player to hit the mark was Diana Taurasi from the Phoenix Mercury – Stewart’s mentor and fellow University of Connecticut alum.
“I think it’s a cool honor for sure,” Stewart said after the game. “Obviously when you’re able to kind of pass someone like [Taurasi] who is paving the way with scoring and all of that. It’s an incredible honor and also something that I will definitely text her about. All in all, I wouldn’t be able to be here without my teammates and I appreciate them for continuing to set me up to get to this point. We’re trying to do more than just get accolades.”
Stewart led the Liberty’s comeback after the team trailed by as many as 16 points early in the game. She finished the game with 22 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
“That first quarter wasn’t a surprise but we knew we had to get ourselves out of a hole,” Stewart said. “I think we began to be more disruptive defensively and that led to us getting out into transition offensively which was good for us.”
The Liberty won 81-75 to improve to 16-3 on the season. The team’s next game will be on July 2 against the Minnesota Lynx.
I love seeing women succeed in Sports. Great story!
